Letter to the Editor\/Opinion piece by Saltbush Club’s Viv Forbes<\/strong>
Australian Climate Sceptics blog<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Away back in the good old days<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    when men could find a job;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When money was as good as gold<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     and tax was just two bob;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When men would work and say with pride<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     that they weren\u2019t on the dole;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

T\u2019was then that politicians came<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to play an active role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must unite,\u201d the statesmen said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     \u201cin case we have to fight;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need a central government<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     to maximise our might.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re all Australians too, you see,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     not rough colonial folk;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need a sign to show the world<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this nation is no joke.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll plan a grand new Commonwealth<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     of which we can be proud;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ll build a national capital<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     with lakes and parks endowed;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For no expense can be too much<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     with national pride at stake;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our children will recall with thanks,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0we did it for their sake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They confiscated men and tools<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     to build themselves a home;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It started with a gabbing place<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     where useful flocks once roamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They capped the hills with monuments<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     and manicured the grounds<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the quarters of their servants<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0spoilt the land for miles around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then their horde of tax collectors<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     spread like locusts through the land,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And their rules and regulations<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     drained the cash to lawyers\u2019 hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The courts became political <\/p>\n\n\n\n

     (mere creatures of the State)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rule of law and common sense<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0became quite out-of-date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The people then grew restless<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    at this cross they had to bear;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time for us to question <\/p>\n\n\n\n

     if this road leads anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What should have been our watch dog<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     sitting quietly by the gate<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is in the house and now he snarls <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0if we don\u2019t fill his plate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We must dismiss the traitors<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    who have got us in this mess;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The federation must return<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     to things it can do best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defence is what we hired them for<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     not meddling in our lives;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If they protect, while we produce<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      a new dawn will arrive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
