Developments in the science of climate<\/strong>

The latest IPCC report is mainly political rhetoric\u00a0and\u00a0conjecture about human\u00a0derived\u00a0carbon dioxide bringing more storms, fires and\u00a0heat. The chart below from\u00a0the report’s\u00a0Summary<\/a>\u00a0radically and implausibly revises previously accepted temperature history, resurrecting Michael Mann’s 1999 hockey stick fabrications.\u00a0I covered the issue in the\u00a0Spectator<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0here<\/a>\u00a0is an informed analysis from\u00a0Jo Nova.\u00a0\u00a0<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Richard Lindzen<\/a>\u00a0estimated human actions in doubling CO2 emissions will increase global temperatures by 1\u00b0C, with only neglible further increases. Lindzen\u00a0gives\u00a0this<\/a>\u00a0assessment of climate alarmism.\u00a0\u00a0

\u00a0The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) uses Greenland ice data to provide an alternative temperature picture to that of the IPCC.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Connolly, Soon<\/a>\u00a0and 21 other distinguished authors conclude that the IPCC has grossly\u00a0underestimated the role of the sun in climate trends. They place the human contribution at one quarter that of the IPCC. The difference stems from the IPCC using all data, whereas the alternative study seeks to eliminate the \u201curban heat island\u201d effect by using only rural sites. Similarly,\u00a0Mitchell et al<\/a>\u00a0find the IPCC models seriously overshoot the actual warming.\u00a0

Professors William van Wijngaarden and Will Happer use a major breakthrough in\u00a0radiation physics<\/a>\u00a0to demonstrate that CO2 and H2O are \u201cextremely saturated\u201d at present atmospheric concentrations and that dangerous multi-degree warming (IPCC has 2.5\u00b0C to 4\u00b0C) assumed by the climate emergency cannot occur.\u00a0

Global warming bringing more heat-related deaths?\u00a0Sterling Burnett<\/a>\u00a0shows the opposite:<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Climate is cyclical: humans always prosper in warm times and suffer during cold times.
Nor is it getting hotter in the US<\/a>, where the per cent of hot days has fallen.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Agitprop<\/a> is mounting ahead of the Glasgow climate change meeting as alarmists discover \u201ca weakening\u201d of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation<\/a> (AMOC).  This transports warm, salty water from the tropics to northern Europe, sending colder water back south along the ocean floor and its weakening can bring abrupt change in climate.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
 Alarmist headlines also accompanied a decline in Arctic ice. LiveScience<\/a> thundered \u201cMassive melting event strikes Greenland after record heat wave,\u201d on August 2 but this followed record growth in the ice sheet. Here<\/a> is the picture for the whole year<\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Developments in politics of climate<\/strong>

Following the IPCC release, there was an\u00a0uptick<\/a>\u00a0(from 40 to 45 per cent) in the\u00a0share of Americans<\/a> who say they are \u201cvery concerned\u201d about climate change.\u00a0 Even though US hot days have not increased, the U.S.\u00a0Department of Health and Human Services<\/a>\u00a0is establishing the Office of Climate Change and Health Equity (OCCHE) in response to President Biden\u2019s\u00a0Executive Order “Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad”.\u00a0

Under its climate change policy, the Biden Administration is attempting to pause new oil and gas leases and has made similar moves with coal.\u00a0 The\u00a0Interior Department<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0regulatory impediments and cost impositions on US coal mining is however confronting\u00a0court action<\/a>\u00a0forcing it to move forward with oil and gas leases. But the\u00a0Public Service Enterprise Group<\/a>, New Jersey\u2019s largest utility owner, is selling natural gas-fired power plants for $1.92 billion as part of its effort to curb its carbon emissions and New York\u2019s pension fund is examining a sell off of its\u00a0$640 million shale oil and gas<\/a>\u00a0investments.

Bill Gates said his\u00a0Breakthrough Energy<\/a>\u00a0will spend $1.5 billion green energy over three years if the $100 billion energy aspects of the\u00a0 government infrastructure package becomes law.\u00a0\u00a0

The\u00a0US Treasury<\/a>\u00a0has required the World Bank and other multilateral lending agencies it supports to cease lending for fossil fuels.\u00a0

The UK\u2019s Climate Change Commission headed by green subsidy-seeker,\u00a0Lord Deben<\/a>, put the UK\u2019s cost of net zero at\u00a0\u00a349.5 billion<\/a>\u00a0(1.3 per cent of GDP).\u00a0\u00a0Andrew Montford<\/a>\u00a0sought CCC’s data, but was told they had, \u201coverwritten and erased the spreadsheet\u201d. Clearly, UK politicians and public servants negligently waived through the decarbonisation policy on the basis of concocted figures. Net zero’s\u00a0\u00a0true costs<\/a>, if feasible, would be over \u00a32.3 trillion (70 per cent of GDP).\u00a0\u00a0

\u00a0Benny Peiser<\/a>\u00a0writes \u201cCurrently, UK consumers are funding renewable energy investors to the tune of \u00a312 billion per year, taken from consumer bills as stealth taxes.\u201d That is comparable with the\u00a0$7 billion a year<\/a>\u00a0cost of Australian taxes and regulations.\u00a0

Australia denies itself wealth as yet another\u00a0coal mine<\/a>\u00a0is rejected by “judicial” planning authorities – there’s always some variation of a “rare upland swamp” to conscript to the cause!\u00a0\u00a0

Woke\u00a0BHP<\/a>, under pressure from global investors, has sold its oil and coal assets. The\u00a0Government<\/a> cites falling coal use and increased rollout of subsidised renewables as putting Australia on track to meeting its Paris 26-28 per cent emission reduction target.\u00a0

Reality bites in\u00a0Spain<\/a>, where the Socialist government has temporarily cut taxes on energy to limit the impact of price rises induced by green policies. \u00a0\u00a0

But in Germany, as part of a future government, the\u00a0Greens<\/a>\u00a0want a climate ministry to oversight other ministries\u2019 plans to ensure their compatibility with the Paris Climate Agreement. Fueling this claim, Ms. Merkel, in response to recent floods said, \u201cWe must get faster in the battle against climate change.\u201d This is despite\u00a0Bjorn Lomborg<\/a>\u00a0showing that controls over rivers mean much reduced flooding and that the European Flood Awareness System predicted the recent floods and formally warned the German government.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Developments in the\u00a0economics of climate<\/strong>

Globally, annualised\u00a0new coal plant capacity<\/a>\u00a0in the first half of 2021 was less than half that of the previous ten year average. China\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), one of the world\u2019s few sources of investment for coal developments, has markedly reduced this funding, prompting\u00a0anti-coal sources<\/a>\u00a0to speculate it \u201cis likely to end quietly\u201d\u00a0<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Yet,\u00a0China announced 35m tonnes<\/a>\u00a0of coal-dependent ironmaking capacity in the first half of 2021, more than in all of 2020, according to the\u00a0Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air<\/a>\u00a0advocacy group. Lauri Myllyvirta, the Centre’s\u00a0 lead analyst, said \u201cI don\u2019t see the maths for getting to carbon peak by 2030 without a 30 per cent reduction from steel\u201d.

\u00a0Graham Lloyd<\/a>\u00a0points out \u201cemissions continue to grow as increases from developing economies swamp cuts from the developed world.\u00a0 The developed world is proposing deep cuts to emissions but at the same time outsourcing industrial production of the things needed to make the transition to China, including the greenhouse gas emissions involved.\u201d China offers a mirage of future reductions, while India will not even do this.\u00a0

The first comprehensive analysis of (blue)\u00a0hydrogen from gas<\/a>\u00a0with carbon-capture-and-storage finds its greenhouse gas footprint is 20% greater than burning natural gas or coal for heat and 60% greater than burning diesel oil. Many countries, including the UK and Australia, have promoted the technology as a contribution to low emission energy. In the\u00a0BHP Woodside<\/a>\u00a0merger, blue hydrogen is lauded as a \u201cbridge\u201d to water-based green hydrogen.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
